Saddle Up for Fun: Brand-New Inclusive Play Area Opens at Murray Road, Ipswich

Posted on June 5, 2026 by Press Team

We have some wonderful news for local families—the brand-new children’s play area at Murray Road Recreation Ground has officially opened its gates! If you are looking for a fun, engaging, and inclusive place to spend time with the kids, this is a brilliant new addition to our local community spaces.

This fantastic new facility is packed with 29 pieces of play equipment, designed specifically for children aged between one and 14 years old. What makes this park truly special is its unique horse-racing theme, which beautifully nods to the site’s historic past as a former racecourse. Little ones can let their imaginations run wild on a one-of-a-kind Suffolk Punch horse, take their marks at the starting block complete with binoculars, tackle a show jumping trail, race around the track, and finally celebrate on the winner’s podium.

Inclusive Play for Every Child

At Ipswich.love, we are passionate about community spaces that welcome absolutely everyone, and this new play area has been thoughtfully designed with inclusivity at its heart. It features a brilliant range of accessible equipment, ensuring that all children can play happily together. Highlights include a wheelchair-accessible carousel, braille alphabet and number panels, and engaging sign language learning features.

There is also a dedicated communication panel, which is a wonderful addition for children who may find verbal communication challenging. This allows them to easily express themselves by pointing to symbols, ensuring every child feels understood and included in the fun.

Investing in Our Community Spaces

The Murray Road play area is part of Ipswich Borough Council’s wider £3.5 million play area strategy. This ongoing investment is all about modernising and improving play facilities right across the borough, creating welcoming, safe, and active environments for families and local residents.

Councillor Stefan Long, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sport, shared his excitement about the opening: “I’m delighted to see the new play area at Murray Road Recreation Ground now open for families to enjoy. This fantastic new space gives children more opportunities to get outside, be active and use their imagination.

“The horse-themed equipment is a wonderful way to celebrate the history of this site, helping children connect with the past while having fun. It’s also important that this play area has been designed to be inclusive, so children can play happily together. The opening marks another key milestone in the council’s ongoing investment in parks and open spaces, creating welcoming environments for communities across Ipswich.”

If you are planning a visit soon, do keep in mind that the surrounding area will be getting freshly turfed next week to put the finishing touches on this community asset. Grab the kids, pack a snack, and head down to enjoy everything the new Murray Road play area has to offer!
